Aegina, in the Saronic island group, is 27 kilometres from Athens and only a forty minute hydrofoil ride from Piraeus, making it one of the most accessible of all the Greek islands. It is a very popular destination for Greek tourists and holidaymakers, many of whom keep holiday homes on the island. The main port is Aegina Town in the northwest which is a small but lively town with many shops and tavernas, an open fish market and picturesque narrow back streets to explore. On the other side of the island is the pretty resort of Agia Marina which also has a ferry service to and from Piraeus. Here there are plenty of good quality bars and restaurants and a large sandy beach with sunbeds. There are also several other lovely beaches around the island, one of the more popular being Marathonas, a few kilometres south of Aegina Town where there are a couple of tavernas. Further south and opposite the small uninhabited island of Moni is the charming fishing village of Perdika, with plenty of restaurants serving delicious fresh fish. There are also many quieter beaches to be found where one can relax and soak up the Greek sunshine. A short distance inland from Agia Marina you will find the impressive ruins of the Temple of Aphaia dating back to the 5th century B.C. From here there are fantastic views across the island and out to sea. There are various bus and taxi services and facilities for car or scooter hire, so it is not difficult to see and explore the island, which is certainly worth doing.
