Santorini boasts some pretty amazing scenery and is an island for which Greece is particularly well known. A dramatic, multi-coloured cliff runs down the western side of the island, with the towns of Thira and Oia perched precariously on top. As I arrived at the Athinios port, after I had been bowled over by the spectacular view, my thoughts wandered to how on earth we were going to get up what seemed a completely impassable cliff face. Then I noticed the road scratched into the rock and the collection of hoteliers awaiting our arrival at the port. As our hotel’s minibus drove us up the cliff, we enjoyed a magnificent view of the sun setting over the volcanos Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, which nestle comfortably into the curved bay of Santorini’s west coast. We headed for the east coast, and stayed in the tourist centre of Perissa, where a pleasant strip of bars and restaurants leads down to a striking black sandy beach. Other beaches worth seeing include the beach resort of Kamari, Red Beach, with its red and black pebbles and Perivolos, the longest black sand beach on the island. Santorini’s capital is the cliff-top town of Thira. Considered to be one of the most romantic places in Greece, Thira has a good selection of restaurants and accommodation, which tend to be more expensive than those on the beaches, and some of the best views of the sunset you’ll get. But the king of the sunsets has to be Oia at the north of the island. One of the most photographed places in Greece, Oia offers some truly awesome views and it’s easy to see why couples might want to have their weddings in Santorini. The impressive landscape and breath-taking scenery make Santorini a must see for island hoppers and holiday makers alike.
