A tranquil and unspoilt island, Leros is an inherently pretty island which has embraced the Dodecanean style of architecture, with buildings coloured in ochre, deep red, pinks and yellows, as well as the traditional Greek blue and white. Visitors will normally arrive at either the port and marina of Laki in the south west, or the domestic airport in the north and often head towards the island’s main town of Platanos, where one can find a good selection of hotels and tavernas and a small handful of bars. To the south of Platanos, and a short walk, is the pretty fishing village of Pandeli, and to the north the attractive little port of Agia Marina. These three make up the bulk of the island’s population and offer a good base for exploring the rest of the island, which one can do by car or scooter and to a certain extent, by foot. The 11th century Byzantine castle is a must see. Perched high on top of a hill above Platanos, and in very good condition, the views from here over Agia Marina and beyond are simply spectacular. Long, sandy Alinda beach just north of Agia Marina is lined with guest houses and tavernas with tables on the beach and is popular for both its proximity to the towns and its prettiness. And to the south of Pandeli is the attractive beach of Vromolithos. Further afield, are many more beaches, both sandy and pebbly, including peaceful Blefouti in the north and sheltered Gourna in the west. Whilst not entirely untouched by tourism, this remains a charming and appealing island and those looking for a serene and relaxing holiday will certainly find this in Leros.
