Situated in the Ionian Sea to the west of the Greek mainland, Corfu was one of the very first islands to embrace international tourism, and is able to offer most of the things that might interest a visitor. From the more mountainous north to the lower-lying south, there is a wide variety of scenery and all around the coast lots of beautiful beaches. Some of the resorts are very lively, such as the hedonistic Kavos, famed for its package tourism and wild parties, but it is not difficult to find places that are quiet and peaceful. Due to its relatively northerly location, the summer climate is very agreeable, and because of the relatively high winter rainfall, it is one of the greenest of the Greek Islands. Corfu has a very rich history, stretching right back into Ancient Greek mythology. For a time it was part of the eastern Roman Empire and from 1400 spent almost 400 years under Venetian rule. Today it is still a popular holiday destination for Italians, as well as the English and a whole host of other European nationalities. Corfu boasts a huge array of interesting architecture, including monasteries and many castles spread around the island. The island’s capital is Corfu Town, which is one of the most charming and beautiful towns in Greece with its small winding streets, many of which are too narrow for cars. Corfu has its own international airport, with direct flights to all over Europe.
