The birthplace of Hippocrates in 460 BC, Kos is an island rich in history and also provides a varied and beautiful holiday destination, offering everything from vibrant nightlife to relaxed family friendly beaches and fresh seafood. The main tourist centres are Kos Town, a lively port town with excellent nightlife, shops, plenty to do and a nearby pebbly but long and pretty beach; Kardamena, an attractive coastal town which also has great facilities, abundant nightlife and a decent beach; and Tingaki, which has a stunning long sweeping golden beach and slightly more low-key nightlife. If you are looking for somewhere a little more quiet, you may enjoy Mastichari and Marmari for a chilled out break and glorious white sandy beaches. Many of the island’s beaches have watersports facilities and windsurfing is a popular sport on Kos. For those wishing to venture around the island, the village of Zia offers amazing panoramic views, as does Kefalos in the south; and its nearby ruins dating back to the 5th century BC are well worth a visit. The island boasts a modern marina located in Kos Town with an abundance of facilities for sailing and cruising, as well as several smaller ports dotted around its 112 km of coastline. Its temperate climate and soil enriched by volcanic ash gives Kos a lush green landscape and fertility unrivalled by many other islands. The local economy is generated by agriculture, farming and fishing but primarily by tourism. Kos is very easily accessible via either its international airport, with flights serving the UK and other European airports daily, or by boat from Rhodes, just 2.5 hours away or from many other neighbouring islands.
